Dr. Kowitz graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1990 and joined the Lakeside staff in 1995. He brings amazing experience to his practice, and clients really like working with him for his compassion and his ability to talk medicine in ways that are easily understood. He is our ultrasound guru and is very willing to explain and teach his colleagues about ultrasound. In his words “The camaraderie and cooperation of the staff is wonderful”.
When not working he enjoys singing, helping coach his son Matthew’s baseball team and fishing. He and his wife, Melissa, have two children Matthew and Hope. Their household also includes four furry family members – two cats, Baxter and Phinneas, and two dogs, Shamus and Daphne. The Kowitz family enjoys all the different types of entertainment Milwaukee offers – sports, music and theater as well as the culture diversity found in the area.

Dr. Martinez graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1995 and has spent the majority of her career her at Lakeside, joining the hospital medical staff in 2001. She enjoys feline and canine internal medicine, and is a well-loved vet at Lakeside. Dr. Martinez loves the staff and her clients. Many, she has seen for years and watched their furry family members grow. She also enjoys developing new client and pet relationships.
Dr. Martinez and her family stay busy in spring, summer, and fall going to Milwaukee’s many festivals, the Brewers games, exploring downtown and the lakefront – “there is so much here.” She and her husband, Chris, have two daughters, Madi and Rosa “they rock.” Driving them to school, to and from sporting events and camping during the summer means a highly active schedule for the family. Also sharing their home are three awesome cats Daisy, Enrique and Madame Butterfly, who came into Lakeside in 2010 as four week old kittens that were headed to the humane society. Not one to stand back and let that happen, she brought them home instead – one of her happiest days.

Dr. Poetzel graduated from the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine in 1990 and joined the Lakeside staff in 2005. He enjoys all types of surgery, and has repaired many cruciate tears (anterior cruciate ligament) for our canine patients. He also has a soft spot for new puppy and kitten exams. Practicing at Lakeside is great because “It hardly seems like work when you are surrounded by hard working, friendly, enthusiastic coworkers.” He has a sharp and dry wit which is appreciated by the Lakeside staff and keeps us on our toes.
Dr. Poetzel likes Milwaukee because of “how ridiculously friendly people here are and it takes me leaving the area to realize that.” When not at work, he enjoys watching his daughter play fast pitch softball, or fishing with his wife, son, and daughter. The Poetzel family has two Labrador retrievers, a parakeet, guinea pig, and a snake.
