Dr. Frank graduated from University of Illinois in 1979. He has spent his career at Lakeside Animal Hospital, where he enjoys problem-solving the cases. Dr. Frank is very interested in avian and exotic medicine and has helped the Schlitz Audubon Center and the Urban Ecology Center with their animals – feathered, scaled and furry. He loves being in the Milwaukee area because of Lake Michigan which provides him with many bird watching opportunities. He is an avid birder and is one of Wisconsin Society for Ornithology’s most active contributors to Seasonal Field Notes and Cornell University’s E-bird. He does bird breeding censusing for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife and Wisconsin Society for Ornithology. Besides birding he enjoys reading, gardening, hiking and swimming.

Dr. Rice is the managing DVM at Lakeside Animal Hospital. He graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1986, and has spent his career at Lakeside Animal Hospital. Dr. Rice enjoys general practice and is particularly interested in internal medicine and dentistry. He sees Lakeside as a big family where we laugh, cry, get mad at each other and then celebrate each other.
He was born and raised in Milwaukee and has only been outside of the Milwaukee area for his education. He thinks, speaks and acts like a Milwaukeean and believes there is a basic goodness that most Milwaukeeans share.
When not at work he enjoys brewing his own beer. He’s a big sports fan especially for the Brewers, UWM Panthers, Badgers and Packers. He is an avid runner and enjoys spending time with his wife, Sara, at home and at their cottage in Tomahawk, Wi. They have two adult children, Laura and David. Their furry children include a nine year old golden retriever named Rudy and a 8 month kitten named Finnoagain who acts as only kittens can chewing, running and stealing Rudy’s food.
Favorite book: Usually the one I am reading. Enjoys history books and an occasional science fiction book.
Person admired: Presidents Lincoln and FDR, Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa, the medical personnel of Doctors without Borders and my late father.
If you could have one superpower what would you choose? Growing up I wanted to be able to fly like Superman. The problem with that superpower is back then I didn’t like heights and I still don’t.

Dr. Kowitz graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1990 and joined the Lakeside staff in 1995. He brings amazing experience to his practice, and clients really like working with him for his compassion and his ability to talk medicine in ways that are easily understood. He is our ultrasound guru and is very willing to explain and teach his colleagues about ultrasound. In his words “The camaraderie and cooperation of the staff is wonderful”.
When not working he enjoys singing, helping coach his son Matthew’s baseball team and fishing. He and his wife, Melissa, have two children Matthew and Hope. Their household also includes four furry family members – two cats, Baxter and Phinneas, and two dogs, Shamus and Daphne. The Kowitz family enjoys all the different types of entertainment Milwaukee offers – sports, music and theater as well as the culture diversity found in the area.

Dr. Martinez graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1995 and has spent the majority of her career her at Lakeside, joining the hospital medical staff in 2001. She enjoys feline and canine internal medicine, and is a well-loved vet at Lakeside. Dr. Martinez loves the staff and her clients. Many, she has seen for years and watched their furry family members grow. She also enjoys developing new client and pet relationships.
Dr. Martinez and her family stay busy in spring, summer, and fall going to Milwaukee’s many festivals, the Brewers games, exploring downtown and the lakefront – “there is so much here.” She and her husband, Chris, have two daughters, Madi and Rosa “they rock.” Driving them to school, to and from sporting events and camping during the summer means a highly active schedule for the family. Also sharing their home are three awesome cats Daisy, Enrique and Madame Butterfly, who came into Lakeside in 2010 as four week old kittens that were headed to the humane society. Not one to stand back and let that happen, she brought them home instead – one of her happiest days.

If you could have one superpower what would you choose? I would love the ability to speak to the scared, anxious dog or cat and let them know we are trying to help them, not hurt them.

Dr. Poetzel graduated from the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine in 1990 and joined the Lakeside staff in 2005. He enjoys all types of surgery, and has repaired many cruciate tears (anterior cruciate ligament) for our canine patients. He also has a soft spot for new puppy and kitten exams. Practicing at Lakeside is great because “It hardly seems like work when you are surrounded by hard working, friendly, enthusiastic coworkers.” He has a sharp and dry wit which is appreciated by the Lakeside staff and keeps us on our toes.
Dr. Poetzel likes Milwaukee because of “how ridiculously friendly people here are and it takes me leaving the area to realize that.” When not at work, he enjoys watching his daughter play fast pitch softball, or fishing with his wife, son, and daughter. The Poetzel family has two Labrador retrievers, a parakeet, guinea pig, and a snake.

Dr. Dallwig graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 2008 and joined the Lakeside staff in 2016. She brings a wide range of experience from emergency work to exotic animal involvement. Her medical interests lie in the exotic field and she gladly welcomes all your reptiles, small mammals and birds. She also see cats and dogs. Additionally she has an interest in ultrasound. Dr. Dallwig welcomes the diversity of cases found at Lakeside, as well as the great support staff and overall sense of camaraderie.
When not working Dr. Dallwig keeps very busy – she loves to scuba dive, hike, snowshoe, travel – pretty much anything outdoors and adventurous. Like many of us, she loves the close proximity to Lake Michigan and the numerous state parks Wisconsin has to offer. She lives with three cats – Magnum, Jackson and Mya (the diva!) and a bearded dragon named Oscar.

If you could have one superpower what would you choose? Only one? I would like the ability to speak/understand all languages, communication with animals and it would be really nice to eat whatever I want without calories!!!
